2006 Outgoing Captain versus Incoming Captain
This years matchplay competition was held in howling wind, driving rain and bursts of sunny spells at Nazeing Golf Club on Sunday April 2nd. All those that played were divided into two teams and promptly braved the weather with waterproofs and umbrellas. The result was a tie between the two teams. Each team winning 4 matches.
As we sat in the bar enjoying a shandy or two someone came up with the great idea that the two captains, Tony Stephens and Jon Bunt, should replay the 18th hole in a sudden death play off. So both Tony and Jon went back to their cars, unloaded their carefully packed clubs and shoes, put their golf gear on and marched back to the 18th tee. Both teams sat in the bar feeling guilty that both Tony and Jon went back out into the cold and wind. Eventually we all left the bar to congregate around the 18th green and watched the two captains coming up the fairway. With both balls on the green Tony (a shot down after taking 3 to the green) needed to sink a 30 foot putt to have a chance of halving the hole. His putt ran slightly wide of the cup; Jon then sank his ball in two to win the hole. Congratulations to Jons team, commiserations to Tonys team.
